We have a WINNER!

I am pleased to announce that the Montgomery Miracles have won the 2008 Sober Softball Championship!

The Miracles scored 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning yesterday to edge the Terminators 11-8 in a tight, tense contest.

Kudos to the DuPont Circle Club team for advancing to the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time in their close defeat of the DC GUM / Paddys squad from the WestSide Club.

Stoopid, Mad Props to the Rockville Metro team who defeated the other WestSide Club squad in a dramatic game that was tied going into the 6th inning before Metro unleased their offensive fury!

Also -- thanks to everyone who brought food and drinks to share!  There was a lot of stuff left over at the end, but I think we'd all rather have too much food and water than not enough!

Thanks again for letting me be of service this year.  I had a great time.

I know I'll be seeing some of you in the Fall league in Montgomery County.

Have a safe and happy winter.

Big Love to everybody!

p.s. -- can we please have a little less yelling next year?

July 27th

It's Playoff Sunday!

Woo!

As it is every blessed Summer Sunday in DC, there is rain (even storms) in the forecast for today.

Accuweather says that the rain is supposed to hit in the early afternoon.

Let's hope they're right!

We will play today.

If it rains a little, we'll keep playing.

if it rains a lot, we'll probably wait it out.

Good luck everybody and thanks for a great summer!

July 22nd

Alrightie!

We've made it to the end of another summer softball season!

I hope everyone had a good time.

Congratulations to the Miracles and the Terminators for finishing in 1st and 2nd place respectively.  They will each get a "bye" in the first round of the playoffs.

The playoff matchups are now posted on the schedule.

Our playoff tournament will be held at North Bethesda Middle School this coming Sunday, the 27th of July.

The First round will be held at 9am.

Please do not park on Beech Ave right next to the Upper Field.  The people who live in the house right there do not like us and will call the police if anyone is parked in front of their house.

Please park in the school parking lot or elsewhere in the neighborhood as there will be quite a number of people on hand Sunday morning.

Bring more water and other drinks than you think you need -- it's likely to be very hot.

June 15th

Things are a little damp this morning, but we should be able to play our games as scheduled this morning.

Still, bring a rake or a push-broom to the fields with you this morning in case any "trimming" needs to be done.

As always, take care and have fun out there!

June 10th

This morning, I had a very long and serious phone conversation with the head of the local Umpires' Association regarding the conduct of some players during our games.  It was made very clear to me that some players were behaving unacceptably on the field and this behavior would no longer be tolerated.

I have received an email from his office with an official statement regarding the complaints he has received and how he is going to respond.

You can see a copy of his message here:  Umpire Message

As you can well imagine, I am more than a little bit embarrassed by this.

We built this league several years ago in the spirit of community and fellowship.  In keeping with the mission statements of the Westside and DuPont Circle clubs, we strove to create a positive social opportunity for alcoholics and addicts in recovery in our area.

This kind of conduct flies in the face of everything that is supposed to be important to us.

So please, let's have fun out there.  Let's remember why we are able to play softball together on Sunday mornings.

Please let this be the last time I have to mention any of this.

June 6th

Woo -- it's getting hot!

Looks like we're in for a real scorcher this weekend.  Be sure to bring plenty of cool water and just keep an eye on each other this Sunday morning.

This is the time of year where it's good to have extra players so that everyone doesn't have to play every inning of every game.

Good luck out there!

June 1st

There was no overnight rain so our fields *SHOULD* be playable this morning.

Still, take a rake or a pushboom to the field just in case it's necessary to make a minor adjustment or two on the infield.

Have fun!

May 11th, 2008

Good morning campers!

All reports indicate that the fields are going to be fine and we will be playing softball this morning.

Have fun out there!

May 5th, 2008

Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody!

Looks like our league season is officially underway.  Somehow, 6 teams showed up and 3 fields and played softball.

Unfortunately there was a fair amount of trash talking going on yesterday and it wasn't all in good fun.

Please understand that we do this to engage in the spirit of clean and sober fellowship.  It's perfectly fine to kid each other -- but at no time should such talk EVER become malicious or intimidating.

At no time should any player be trying to psyche out anybody on the other team.

At no time should any player be trying to yell at or interfere with a player on the other team to cause them to make an error.

This is what we do to have fun.

If there are new players on your team that don't quite get the idea of a sober league, please help them understand.

I don't make any money running this league, please don't make it difficult.

April 25th, 2008

When you least expect it, expect it.

Sadly, the Greenbelt Steppers just aren't going to be able to get it together to play this year so we're back at six (6) teams.

Which means, I'm rewriting the schedule one last time with 9 days to go before we start playing games.

Please be sure to check the online schedule prior to next weekend to make sure everybody knows where to be on Sunday the 4th!

Keep yer fingers and toes crossed!

April 22nd, 2008

It appears that we will have seven teams -- I was contacted by Al from the Terminators and they want to play.  I'll have to rewrite the schedule again.

Unfortunately, this means that we won't all get to play each other twice.

Anyways -- I should have an updated schedule soon.

April 20th, 2008

It's raining ... it's not pouring, but it's raining enough that I would advise that we NOT run our players out there to practice today.

We don't need anybody slipping and falling and tearing/breaking something today.

Also -- I finally heard from Al of the Terminators and they want to play so I will be adding them to the schedule soon.

April 16, 2008

Alrightie!

We now have 6 teams!

The Greenbelt Steppers contacted me this past week and indicated that they will indeed be playing this year!

Make a point of checking out the updated season schedule and make sure your players are aware that there has been a change.

Also, team managers really should make a point of getting an emergency contact for each of your players in the event of an injury.  We play a real game with balls and bats and running and stuff -- people get hurt.  Make sure you know who to call if one of your players is injured.

The season starts in 2 1/2 weeks!

April 3rd 2008

Everyone!

I hope we all had a fine winter.

We appear to have 5 teams in our league now.

The teams are:

DC Gum (new team from WestSide Club)
DuPont Circle Club
Montgomery Miracles
Rockville Metro
WestSide Club

I have not been able to contact anyone from the Terminators who wishes to take command of their team -- but I am hopeful.

On thing to note --  We have been asked by the County to start earlier in the morning this year so that we do not conflict with the kids who have our fields after us.

Therefore -- games will start at 9:00am.

The preliminary schedule is up on this site now -- check it out!

More to be revealed.
